Akira Kurosawa was one of the most influential Japanese filmmakers of the century. His films were a combination of imagery and symbolism, often mixing ideas of East and West, ancient and modern. Remarkably, his films are reminiscent of America's Westerns, and often deal with characters who face ethical and moral dilemmas. Probably his most influential film is The Seven Samurai (1954), which was the basis for the American Western classic, The Magnificent Seven. Kurosawa directed many classics, including Rashomon (1950), Yojimbo (1961), and Ran (1985). |
