TOMBSTONE TRIBUTES

Binnie Barnes
by: Bo Jaworsky

Filmdom lost one of its most venerable and versatile actresses who performed from the 1920s to the 1970s. Born Giselle Gertrude Maude Barnes on March 25, 1905 in London, she bridged two continents by first starring in British films, and then in 1934, migrating to the United States to work in Hollywood cinema. Most will remember her for her starring role with John Wayne in the Western entitled, In Old California, in 1943. She also appeared in Sutter's Mill and The Last of the Mohicans, both in 1936, and Frontier Marshal and The Three Musketeers, both in 1939. Ms. Barnes retired from acting in 1955, but came back in 1966 to play a nun in Trouble with Angels, as well as its sequel, Where Angels Go...Trouble Follows, in 1968.
