E.G. Marshall spent the first two decades of his career working in theater — and the last forty — appearing in various television shows and movies. He starred in the award-winning Western, Broken Lance (1954), with Richard Widmark and Spencer Tracy. The story about the fall of a ruling cattle baron won a Oscar® for “Best Story.” In 1959, Marshall appeared in the period picture, The Buccaneer, directed by Anthony Quinn. Just two years later, he appeared on TV’s Rawhide (1961) with Clint Eastwood. It was the same year when E.G. Marshall would land a role for which he would be most remembered — Lawrence Preston on the early lawyer series, The Defenders (1961-1965). He won an Emmy in 1963. The Young Doctors was his next appointment from 1969 to 1973, but the busy actor still managed to pull off two guest showings on The Men from Shiloh, with James Drury, Doug McClure, and Kenneth Tobey.
E.G. Marshall was a prolific character actor and left behind an impressive body of work, including The Chase (1966), Creepshow (1982), and Absolute Power (1997). It should also be remembered that E.G. gallantly defended Humphrey Bogart in The Caine Mutiny!
