Elvis Presley
Elvis Presley: Cowboy

by: Marta Dobrovitz

Elvis Presley in "Charro" (1969)

Sure, Elvis Presley is first and foremost thought of as a singer,
and also regarded by some as an actor, albeit one who starred in mostly
sub standard films, such as Girls! Girls! Girls! and the like, although some
were quite good, like King Creole and Jailhouse Rock, to name a few.
But, I bet hardly any of us ever think of Elvis as a cowboy. Well, of the
29 films he made, three were bona fide westerns and several had
western themes or sequences contained within them.

His own life reflected his love of country and western matters, such
as his early musical influences--Hank Williams, Ray Price, and Marty
Robbins. Elvis even performed at the Grand Ol' Opry on September 25,
1954 (following the release of his second single, "Good Rockin' Tonight")
at the behest of Sam Phillips...........................................................................
