George Montgomery
was born in the "Big Sky" state of Montana in 1916. His
folks were originally from the Ukraine, and first settled in Canada before
immigrating to the United States. George was a dashing, handsome
fellow who ambled into movies as a real life cowboy (a lot like Gary
Cooper who was also reared in Montana) and performed stunt work in
"B" movies.
One of the great noir films
ever done in the late '40s was Brasher Doubloon, in which George
played the famed gumshoe, Philip Marlowe. However, many will
remember Montgomery from Cimarron City that aired on television in
the late '50s.
Montgomery married the
legendary singer, amateur golfer and television hostess, Dinah
Shore. Although they divorced after almost 20 years of marriage,
they remained the best of friends.
Montgomery later demonstrated
another talent when he began to sculpt clay and build
furniture. In fact, George was so good at his craft that his
reputation as an artisan of wood and clay would soon overshadow his
prowess at acting.
George Montgomery was well into
his 80's before leaving us bereft of his decency and multi-talents, and
will be sorely missed. |
