Jay Silverheels

When we think of Jay Silverheels, we are reminded of his character,
“Tonto,” the ever-faithful Indian friend to the “Masked Man.”
Tonto, who defended and upheld “law and order” in the wild West,
has become a legend of meteoric heights in American folklore. Sad
to realize, Jay Silverheels, a true hero in real life, has not been so
regarded.

The first Indian to star in a television series, Silverheels is an
institution–a permanent feature of Indian history, a symbol of the
red race, and a monument to it.

Quite possibly, he was the emancipator responsible for opening the
doors for Indians and other minorities to work as actors in Hollywood.
