TOMBSTONE TRIBUTES

Jester Hairston
by: Dave Ferrier

Jester Hairston

The grandson of slaves from the Hairston Plantation at Belew's Creek, North Carolina, Jester Hairston is perhaps best recognized by Western fans as "Jethro" the loyal and philosophic slave of Richard Widmark's Jim Bowie in The Alamo.

Mr. Hairston graduated Cum Laude from Tufts University and continued his formal music studies at The Julliard School.  He composed over 300 gospel spirituals including "Amen" from the Sidney Poitier film, Lilies of the Valley.  Mr. Hairston's music can also be heard in John Ford's, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon and his debut film, Green Pastures.

Hairston found work in recent years, again as an actor, in the TV series, Amen, which also starred Sherman Hemsley.  Hairston was 98.
