If you have ever speculated
about John Agar' singing talents and wanted to hear him sing, then I have
a tape for you! It's entitled, "John Agar Collectors
Edition" (the first in a series of "John Agar Classics"),
and is, in fact, a collection of demos which the actor recorded several
decades ago. The music itself is minimalistic, but this doesn't
necessarily detract from the experience. Rather, it makes the
listener wonder about how much richer it would have sounded had it been
recorded with a full orchestra. The sound quality of only one or two
pieces are less than clear. The packaging too, is simple with a
homemade look and feel.
As far as Agar himself goes, he is quite proficient and has a somewhat
Johnny Cash feel to his voice. He also speaks through some of his
selections, "Hollywood Heaven" is an ode to long lost movie
icons and legends. "America, Where Are We Going," and
"City of the Angels," have political overtones.
Overall, this tape is directed towards John Agar fans and is probably more
fit for such. However, this tape would also make an interesting
selection for curiosity seekers. The tape is released through:
Bradley Brothers Records & Tapes, P.O. Box 2144, Winnetka, CA.
