When we think of horror movie stars like Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff, the image of movie Westerns does not immediately come to our minds... in fact it doesn't come to mind at all. On the other hand, horror great, Lon Chaney, Jr. is well known to Western movie fans because he was featured in just about as many Westerns as he was in horror films. The same cannot be said about Karloff and Lugosi. However, before they were established as horror stars, Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi appeared in many different kinds of roles and movies. In the silent movie days, Boris Karloff appeared in supporting roles in quite a few B-Westerns. After talkies came in, his lisping British accent proved unsuitable for Westerns even though in later years he appeared quite improbably as a American Indian in the films Unconquered and Tap Roots. The Hungarian, Bela Lugosi is a different story. He rarely appeared in Westerns and then, only in films made in Germany where he lived in 1919 and 1920 before coming to the United States to become an American citizen. Westerns were very popular in Germany at the time so it is not surprising that Lugosi.................................... |
