This is a
worthy telling of a land baron Matthew Devereaux (Spencer Tracy), his
Indian wife Senora (Katy Jurado), and a conflict between the patriarch and
his four sons over management of their huge ranch. Three of Tracy's
sons, led by a bitter, disaffected Widmark, devise a plot against their
father because they are jealous of his power and displeased with his
unshared wealth. Wagner, playing the youngest of the four brothers,
is the loyal one -- the peacemaker who is betrayed by his siblings and
sent to prison. To put it lightly, this is the Cartwright family
from Bonanza gone extremely bad.
Broken Lance is a well-paced, beautifully photographed film with
unforgettable performances by Tracy and Jurado.......................................................................... |
