Broken Lance.

1954: Directed by Edward Dmytryk; Color.  Spencer Tracy, Richard Widmark, Robert Wagner, Katy Jurado, Jean Peters, Hugh O'Brian, Earl Holliman, E.G. Marshall, Robert Burton, Edmund Cobb, Robert Adler, Nacho Galindo, King Donovan, Philip Ober, Edward Franz, Carl Benton Reid, George E. Stone, Paul Kruger, Julian Rivero, Robert Grandlin, Harry Carter, Russell Simpson, Jack Mather, John Eppers.

This is a worthy telling of a land baron Matthew Devereaux (Spencer Tracy), his Indian wife Senora (Katy Jurado), and a conflict between the patriarch and his four sons over management of their huge ranch.  Three of Tracy's sons, led by a bitter, disaffected Widmark, devise a plot against their father because they are jealous of his power and displeased with his unshared wealth.  Wagner, playing the youngest of the four brothers, is the loyal one -- the peacemaker who is betrayed by his siblings and sent to prison.  To put it lightly, this is the Cartwright family from Bonanza gone extremely bad.

Broken Lance is a well-paced, beautifully photographed film with unforgettable performances by Tracy and Jurado..........................................................................
