TOMBSTONE TRIBUTES

Frederick Engel
by: Sean Strebin

A movie producer, Engel's film Lilies of the Field, produced an Oscar for Sidney Poitier.  The USC graduate got his start in the mailroom at MCA, and worked his way up to an agent representing such writers as William Inge, Mel Brooks and William Bowers.

Engel gave Western fans the gritty hits Duel at Diablo, that starred James Garner, Dennis Weaver, and again, Sidney Poitier; and Will Penny that starred Charlton Heston, Donald Pleasance and Lee Majors.  Engel and Weaver would later work together again as producer and actor, respectively, on the television series McCloud.  Engel died of health complications on November 28, 2001, at age 71.
