Southern
Gospel music lost one of its pioneers, when legendary piano player-singer
Hovie Lister passed away due to a series of health problems stemming from
throat cancer that was diagnosed as early as 1993. In recent years, and in
spite of his health, the Grammy® Award winner
kept movin' forward, singing for the Lord in numerous concerts and making
many more albums.
In his early twenties,
Lister established The Statesmen Quartet -- an innovative group that would
go on to become one of the most popular, influential and inspirational
singing groups of its kind. The upbeat group hit its peak in the mid-1950s,
and despite several personnel changes over the years, Lister's Statesmen
managed to persevere and consistently produce a quality that was nothing
less than outstanding.
Throughout his illustrious
50-plus year career, Lister's enthusiasm and energy never diminished, nor
did his talent or dedication to his God, family and fans. |
