Rugged-looking, raspy-sounding Lyle Bettger could ironically play suave, debonair characters rather well, but he was perhaps best suited for depicting menacing villains. Fine examples of Bettger’s prowess as a heavy include his ringleader of cattle thieves anxious to frame and string up Jay Silverheels’ Tonto in the color feature film The Lone Ranger, his Ike Clanton, head honcho of hired assassins, in Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, and his “filthy murderer” of John Wayne’s crew in the non-Western The Sea Chase.
