James Stewart portrays Charlie Anderson, a farmer in Virginia,
whose life becomes miserable when his large family is surrounded
on all sides by the two forces of the Civil War.

He refuses to support the Confederacy because he does not favor
slavery, but he will not follow the Union because he doesn't believe
in war. When his youngest son, played by Philip Alford (To Kill a
Mockingbird)
is taken prisoner, Anderson will do anything it
takes.......................
