The Last of the Mohicans

(1932) Harry Carey, Hobart Bosworth, Frank Coghlan, Edwina Booth, Lucile Browne, Walter Miller, Bob Kortman, Yakima Canutt, Chief Big Tree, Tully Marshall, Al Craven; Directed by B. Reeves Eason and Ford Beebe; B/W

This 1932, Mascot Studios, 12 Chapter serialized version stars Harry Carey, Sr. in the Hawkeye role and offers Edwina Booth as the female lead in a sluggishly paced, clearly outdated adaptation of James Fenimore Cooper’s classic tale of the early American frontier. Later versions such as the 1936 adaptation with Randolph Scott in the lead role of the beautifully filmed 1992 Michael Mann adaptation with Daniel Day Lewis are far superior. For cultists only (if there are Last of the Mohicans cultists), a film to seek out is the even earlier 1922 version, filmed in Germany with Bela Lugosi as the treacherous Indian Leader, Magua.
